News from Aeroseum – a progress report by Roger Eliasson

-First, I want to express a very big Congratulations to the Veteran Aviation Society for the premiere flight with the GV 38 SE-AHC which took place here at Säve on July 28. It was a much-anticipated event after the renovation work had been going on for 24 years. It began in 1998 in the GVFS building premises in Säve, but was moved down to the Aeroseum in 2003, when the Society was offered a space here for construction and renovation activities. Over the years, the work on the GV 38 has been able to be followed by all visitors to the Aeroseum and it has attracted great interest.

-Due to the pandemic, we have not been able to carry out the Children’s Flight Weekend and the Model and Hobby Fair in either 2020 or 2021, which was very sad, but this year we were happily able to arrange both of these popular events. Judging by the influx of visitors, the events were highly anticipated. Order thus restored, we can state.

-A new project, with the working name “Höjdpunkten”, which we recently launched is to build an activity area up on Aeroseumberget. Our idea is to build a disabled-friendly park with an aviation theme, where you can hang out, play and explore the laws of physics using, for example, a ropeway, a see-saw and an obstacle course, which have already been acquired. We are also planning to build a large solar park up on Aeroseumberget.

-On September 20, the hull of the “Flying J 22” renovation project ceremoniously rolled down into the Aeroseum witnessed by around 50 guests. It was fitting enough on the day 80 years since this all-Swedish fighter plane made its first flight. It is the project organization Warbirds of Sweden that, on behalf of the owner Svedinos Bil &Flygmuseum in Ugglarp, undertook to refurbish the aircraft 22149 to flying condition. Here it is now set up where the continued renovation work will be carried out, to the delight of all visitors to the Aeroseum interested in aviation history, who can follow the completion of the J 22 “from the first floor”.

-A very pleasing news is that the JAS 39-2 Gripen is finally coming to the Aeroseum. It is about the second test aircraft that was built to, among other things, carry out tests of the control system. The plane coming to the Aeroseum flew for the first time in 1990. After a total flight time of 461 hours, it was handed over to the Air Force Museum in 1999 and is now moving in with us at the Aeroseum in 2022.

-No visitors have missed that for a couple of months there have been two Lockheed Hercules parked outside the eastern approach to the Aeroseum. It is the first and third copy of the Hercules aircraft, which was acquired by the Air Force in the 1960s. The one Hercules plane, -3, is to be dismantled on site. The cockpit must then be handed over to the Air Force Museum in Linköping for display. Airplane -1 must be deposited at Aeroseum. The wings, tail section and engines, which are currently missing, must be assembled. The intention is that we should be able to show the aircraft both outside and inside to visitors.

-But that’s not enough – just a few weeks ago Aeroseum received an offer to dispose of two Saab 105, SK 60. The aircraft type will now be available for museum placement after it is taken out of service as a training aircraft in the Air Force and replaced with another aircraft type. It will be a very interesting addition to Aeroseum’s aircraft fleet, which we are delighted about.

-Now we also have “Halloween” and “Christmas at Aeroseum” to look forward to. There is always something going on at Aeroseum, we usually say, and we certainly have reason for that, don’t we, says Roger Eliasson in conclusion.

Newsletter to the members of the association Friends of Aeroseum – 2022-06-15

Aeroseum is making a completely new investment in building a unique, educational activity park on top of the mountain.

For many years, Aeroseum has been running a curriculum-based school operation under the management of employed pedagogues. The school activities aim, with the help of the exhibited objects, airplanes, helicopters and other aircraft, to create an increased understanding and interest in natural science and technology among the visiting school students.

On top of the mountain that houses the Aeroseum, we now intend to make a completely new venture by building a unique, educational, 70,000 m2 experience-based activity park in this beautiful natural area. The target groups are made up of all categories of visitors – children, young people, adults, families, the elderly and the disabled. Here, visitors will be engaged and trained in problem solving, cooperative exercises and motor skills. Special attention in the design of the facility’s various stations is given to visitors with various types of disabilities.

The intention is to expand the park with various learning stations. As one of the first steps is to build an educationally designed obstacle course with about ten different obstacles, which will encourage cooperation to reach the goal. It should attract all categories of visitors to try it on.

At an early stage, we will also build a cable car where, with the help of various experiments, we will talk about the impact of forces on a body.

The investment in building this activity park with the working name “Höjdpunkten” runs over several years. Our vision is to gradually install 20–30 different educational stations on the current activity area. An important part is to place a number of picnic tables from the start and prepare some barbecue areas for the visitors to use.

Right now, a preliminary study of the project is underway under the direction of architect Bo Lindholm, Gothenburg together with Julia Neteniel from Uppsala University. The study will result in a kickoff at the beginning of September.

In the project, we cooperate with, among other things, with:
Chalmers Institute of Technology, which adds an understanding of technology and technology development.
University of Gothenburg, Department of Education, which provides expertise in pedagogy.
RBU – National Association for Mobility Impaired Children.
Reference groups down representatives of the target groups.

The members of the association Aeroseums friends are warmly welcome to contribute with suggestions and opinions.

Aeroseum’s Friends donate money to project “Höjdpunkten”.

The Board of Friends of Aeroseum decided on June 9 to donate 5 000 SEK to Aeroseum “earmarked” to be used for the acquisition of the obstacle course to be installed on top of the mountain as part of the investment in project “Höjdpunkten”. At this announcement, Roger Eliasson expressed a warm thank you to the Friends of Aeroseum for the valuable contribution!

Aeroseum’s Vänner donates an appreciated contribution to the 2. Helikopterdivisionen

Aeroseum has three Hkp 4 helicopters stored in the rock hangar. 2. The helicopter division was formed within Aeroseum’s organization in 2013 and consists of former officers and civilians from the original 2. Hkp division within the Armed Forces. These zealots have since worked to get the Hkp 4  Y70 civilly authorized by the CAA. This happened in 2018, and the helicopter then made the first flight with a national flight permit.

Over the weekend of 25-26 September, Y 70 and Y 72 were ranged out of the mountain for motoring – the first since 2019. On Sunday 26th, Y 70 was motored to an enthusiastic crowd in glorious late summer weather. This special occasion was celebrated with the 2nd Helicopter Division’s Pipes and Drums playing bagpipes and drums, as well as the Skepplanda Home Defense and Culture Association, which brought a guard troop and cook trots.

At the event, 2 Helicopter Division also received a donation of 6 000 SEK from the association Friends of the Aeroseum as a contribution to continuing to keep the helicopter in flyable condition. The gift certificate, which was much appreciated, was handed over by the chairman of the association, Ulf Delbro, to Jan Ljungholm from the 2.Hkpdivisionen

Become a member of Aeroseum’s Friends

Aeroseum makes an outstanding contribution to culture and aviation history in the rock hangar at Säve Airport. However, the business is very resource-intensive. In 2014, the Association Friends of Aeroseum was therefore formed, which above all has the task of supporting Aeroseum financially. The proceeds therefore go to contribute to Aeroseum being able to carry out various, important projects.

Anyone who cares about the preservation of Swedish cultural and aviation history and wants to contribute support to Aeroseum for this effort is welcome to become members of the Association Aeroseum Vänner. Membership is offered in several levels with different membership fees and benefits. The following applies in 2022:

Gold-membership. Membership fee 1 000 SEK per year. Benefits:

  • Free entry on five occasions during regular opening hours for one person or for a member’s family, maximum 2 adults and 2 children 4-16 years.
  • Free flight on four occasions with a selection of Aeroseum’s simulators.

Silver-membership. Membership fee SEK 500 per year. Benefits:

  • Free entry on three occasions during regular opening hours.
  • Free flight on two occasions with a selection of Aeroseum’s simulators.

Bronze-membership. Membership fee SEK 250 per year. Benefits:

  • Free entry on two occasions during regular opening hours.
  • Free flight on one occasion with a selection of Aeroseum’s simulators.

In addition to the benefits above, members will occasionally receive a newsletter with information about ongoing and upcoming projects. In addition, you will also receive an invitation to information meetings on a few occasions during the year.

Membership benefits do not apply to special events/fairs.

Membership is valid per calendar year. Annual fee paid after the end of October also applies to the following year.
